Why do I still use YouTube and Medium?
In my previous article My journey to Yakihoinne and NOSTR i shared my journey to decentralized social media and Yakihonne and Nostr.
Just to recap why we all love Yakihonne
The Big Ideas of Yakihonne on NOSTR
Yakihonne powered by NOSTR brings a lot of essential features that other platforms are not able to deliver
- Ownership You need to trust Yakihonne relay but at the same time, you could use NOSTR power and keep your publications backups. it is your data
- Freedom to write - platform is censorship-free and open to everybody
- Freedom to read - same work with a reading. you could define whom to follow and read from with relays Anonymity - I am a public person but for some people and some countries it could be a part of freedom to stay pseudo-anonymous
- Freedom to reward - with Zaps you could support writers. Yakihonne supports writers a lot . It is more open and forces users to pay
- Transparency - be on top of protocol give you full transparency of data and it is use.
- Community - the biggest superpower I want to thank a team of Yakihonne for an amazing product
Why do I still use Medium?
Nostr in general one of the fast-growing communities that has the support of web3 and Bitcoin communities that actually power a lot of things from development to audience and user volume. Still, even with Bitcoiners, it is an extremely tiny fraction of users available on medium or YouTube platforms. The main two reasons why I was forced to use Medium - are audience and discoverability. it is simple authors are looking for readers. Another problem is convenience and social acceptance. Medium looks more professional and reliable sources even if it is not. Here we have the opposite side effect - a lot of people take a distance from any web3 projects.
Adoption roadblocks
Search engines
Actually, discoverability is connected a lot to the audience’s problems. It is quite hard to google and find NOSTR notes in Google even with a big web hub like Yakihonne. So we cut users in the beginning of the funnel - no search results and CEO optimized flow - no reads no subscriptions - nothing. Even for platforms that indexed well 85% of reads is not from subscribers so it is hard to build a community even with the possibility of being on Google radars.
URLs
Search engines give priority to slug URLs and content of URLs and it is a place where nostr platforms with classical urls lose a battle: https://yakihonne.com/article/naddr1qq2ku32cdfghw5nvxsk5v36dddprwvn624j97q3qu6qhg5ucu3xza4nlz94q90y720tr6l09avnq8y3yfp5qrv9v8susxpqqqp65wvkj2pp
- too long
- too magical
- no correlation with information
- unreal to memorize
We need a way to give nice URLs to articles for better SEO
Indexers and crawlers
I am not sure that Google crawlers do a good job there. Still an open question to tech folks.
Wallets
The nice part of yakihonne - to read you do not need anything !!! It is a regular open web page. It gives access to information without walls but if you want to quickly sign up to a writer and follow him you need to do to much work. in most cases, people will drop this idea on a point of wallet or extension installation. The best wallet is no wallet or embedded wallet - it is a fact. Wallets are a critical infrastructure of web3 and web5. At the same time, it is the biggest adoption stopper. To interact with a NOSTR you need a Wallet you need to be familiar with the concept of cryptographic keys and take a key management responsibility. It creates a wall. Yep, a wallet is a wall between a user and NOSTR-powered projects. For nontech-savvy users, this wall is too high. We struggle with the UX/UI of wallets and wallet integrations. Now wallets are more in the same positions as browsers were in 90th. Something new and exotic and something that not for everybody and the biggest problem - is something that not working out of the box on your mom’s machine or phone.
Mobile and wearable first
I still do not have a good way of interacting with a Yakihonne while I am on the phone. We spend more time on devices than on desktops - so it is a big problem itself. if you have a nice and trusted way of using Yakihonne on mobile - pls write a comment or note about it and share it with me.
Wallets Browser Integration
I am unlucky and struggled a lot for a few months with Alby and Chrome integration. It is simply refuted to work without any visible reasons. Even for tech folk with 20 years of development, it is a challenge. It just confirms a problem that Wallet for not is not a native citizen of OS and user software so integration could be a CHALLENGE !!!!
Performance of decentralized Dapps
Well, we all know why we not getting answers immediately and quite often wait for pages. Dapps are rarely fast and almost never deterministic. We are just at the beginning of an internet-computer decentralized journey. it is acceptable for the community but too much for a web2 user that was born after 2005. it is the most impatient audience ever.
Social acceptance
is non-technical and more community part of the problem. So it is 100% on our side. How to create a reputation of innovative reliable and open community? How to pool users from a classical web2 trap to a better and open world? How to keep a balance between censorship and harm-free information? That all
We have a lot of work todo together and a community and as a developers to pass all this roadblocks
