Why Lightning + Nostr beats every Web2 platform for 0-follower accounts
Why Lightning + Nostr beats every Web2 publishing platform for 0-follower accounts
Most monetization advice for new creators boils down to: first build an audience, then maybe earn. Substack, Medium, YouTube, Twitter — all have implicit 6-12 month trust-building runways before money flows. The platform takes 30-50% even after that.
Lightning + Nostr inverts this. Here’s why it matters for someone with 0 followers today.
The economic primitive is per-event, not per-account
On Twitter, your tweet earns reach via the algorithm scoring your account: prior engagement, follower count, age, suspected bot signals. A brand-new account is throttled by design — the algorithm protects against spam by deflating reach. New accounts post into the void.
Nostr has no algorithm. Each event (kind:1 note, kind:30023 long-form, kind:30402 listing) is signed and broadcast to relays. Clients (Damus, Amethyst, Primal, Habla) decide locally how to surface it: chronological, follow-graph, hashtag, or relay-curated. A great event from a 0-follower account hits the same relay as Jack’s tweet.
Discovery is still hard. But the ceiling is set by the event quality, not the account history.
Zaps are settlement, not engagement metrics
A Twitter like is signal for the algorithm. A zap is 21+ sats actually moving from one wallet to another. The recipient decides nothing — it’s atomic Lightning payment.
This means three things:
- No platform veto. Twitter can shadowban your tip jar. Substack can boot you for content. Lightning routes around — neither relays nor wallets can hold sats hostage post-zap.
- Sub-cent unit cost. A tip on Substack/Patreon hits a $1-3 minimum due to Stripe fees. A zap can be 1 sat (~$0.0006). This enables per-paragraph appreciation, per-reply tipping, per-curation rewards. New economic surfaces appear.
- Settlement happens before the action confirms. Zap-paywalled APIs (NIP-90 DVMs), zap-gated content (NIP-99 classified ads with LN price), zap-funded events (NIP-53 ticketed live streams) all use the same primitive: HTLC settlement = unlock.
The 0-cost stack
A 0-follower account on day one can:
- Generate a Nostr keypair locally (10 lines of nostr-tools).
- Post kind:0 metadata with
lud16: yourname@coinos.io(free LN address, no KYC). - Publish kind:30023 long-form to 4-6 relays. Indexed by Habla.news immediately.
- Publish kind:30402 NIP-99 classified ad listing a service or product with
price: <sats>. - Publish kind:31990 NIP-90 service info advertising a paid AI/data API endpoint.
No signup, no KYC, no platform approval. Total setup time: 30 minutes. Total cost: $0.
What still has to be earned
Discovery. The Nostr ecosystem is small (~1M total accounts, ~100K active). Most relays are fragmented. Without curation, your event is one of millions per day on damus.io.
The play for a 0-follower account is to engage upward: reply substantively to high-engagement notes from accounts your size (1K-10K followers, not 100K+). Cross-post to Habla.news for SEO. Show up in NIP-32 curated lists. Get into one r/nostr or one Hacker News post.
But none of this requires platform approval. The earning primitive is yours from minute one.
Try the math
Assume your kind:30023 long-form gets 200 organic reads in 7 days (low for any platform, achievable on Nostr cold). 1% zap rate = 2 zaps. Median zap on Nostr is ~50 sats. That’s 100 sats / ~$0.06.
Now assume your kind:30402 paid service (1000 sats / $0.60) gets 0 buyers. Your kind:31990 DVM gets 0 calls. The classified ads just sit there — but they don’t disappear, and they cost you nothing to leave running. The expected value is positive even at a 0.1% conversion rate over a year.
This is the boring truth: the floor is $0.06, not $0. Every other publishing platform’s floor is $0 net of fees.
