Hegel’s dialectic offers a powerful model for understanding the evolution of knowledge: a concept or position (thesis) gives rise to its opposite (antithesis), and the conflict between them is resolved through a higher-level integration (synthesis). This process, known as Aufhebung, simultaneously entails cancellation, preservation, and elevation.11 In its ideal form, this process propels knowledge toward ever more comprehensive and advanced states.
In human-led social and political debates, however, the dialectic often stalls in an incomplete stalemate. The fundamental reason is the prevalence of “motivated reasoning.” When individuals hold “directional goals,” such as defending a partisan identity or a cultural worldview, they systematically reject information that contradicts their existing beliefs while actively seeking out confirmatory evidence.13 This cognitive pattern leads to polarization rather than synthesis. The opposing sides remain entrenched in their respective thesis and antithesis, unable to achieve a true

Against this backdrop, AI demonstrates its potential as a mechanism for achieving a genuine Aufhebung. Unlike humans, who are driven by emotion, identity, and ideology, AI can process information with a detached perspective. By analyzing the full spectrum of arguments, evidence, and data from all sides of a debate without bias, AI is not constrained by “directional goals.” It can identify the internal contradictions and one-sidedness in each argument and extract from them a higher-level insight—what Hegel called a “determinate negation”—that resolves these conflicts. The product of this process is not nothingness, but a new synthesis that contains the rational kernel of the previous stages, integrated into a broader perspective. AI, therefore, has the potential to liberate the social sciences from ideological quagmires and become an objective engine driving the dialectical process.
1.2 Intersubjectivity and the Harmonious Synthesis of Reality: From the Ego to the Algorithm
If Hegel’s dialectic describes the dynamic process toward truth, Husserl’s phenomenology provides a definition of truth itself. For Husserl, objective truth is not an isolated, external entity but is constructed through the process of “intersubjectivity”.14 The core of this process is the “harmonious synthesis” (
Einstimmigkeitssynthese), wherein an individual’s perceptions and experiences are continuously cross-referenced, validated, and corrected against the experiences of other subjects, gradually converging to form a stable, objective reality.15

Artificial intelligence offers a breakthrough solution by enabling a “macro-subjective” synthesis. By analyzing vast amounts of human expression—including texts, images, social media behavior, and consumption records—AI can perform the “harmonious synthesis” process on a societal scale. It can identify consistent patterns and “disharmonious” anomalies across the experiences of millions or even billions of individuals. To scale up Husserl’s example: when AI detects a systematic “meow” audio tag within a dataset of millions of “dog” images, it uncovers a collective misperception or data contamination. This capability allows AI to discover patterns of social reality that are invisible to any single individual or group, thereby constructing a more robust and objective picture of reality than humans could ever achieve on their own.
Part II: Deconstructing the Barriers: AI as an Epistemological Instrument
The pursuit of truth in the humanities and social sciences has long been obstructed by the inherent limitations of human cognition, information access, and linguistic expression. Artificial intelligence, with its unique computational power, offers the potential to systematically dismantle these barriers. It can not only process more data but, more importantly, process it in a way that is fundamentally different from humans, thereby circumventing the most deep-seated flaws in human cognition.
2.1 Overcoming Bias and Motivated Reasoning: A “View from Nowhere”
Human researchers, no matter how well-trained, can never fully escape the grip of bias. These biases are not just “garbage in” but are flaws in the human cognitive processing engine itself. While AI also faces the problem of biased training data, its underlying logic—large-scale statistical correlation and pattern recognition—allows it to invert the “expert’s dilemma.” A human expert might unconsciously filter evidence to fit their theory, whereas an AI can be programmed to find all patterns, including those that contradict prevailing theories.
The types of bias prevalent in social science research are numerous and can be systematically categorized:
- Researcher-Induced Bias: This includes “confirmation bias,” the tendency to search for, interpret, and recall information that confirms one’s pre-existing hypotheses, as exemplified by the collective delusion of French scientists in the study of N-rays.1 Other forms include “interviewer bias,” where an interviewer’s knowledge of a subject’s status leads to different questioning or recording; “recall bias,” where subjects’ memories of past events are systematically skewed by their current condition; and “chronology bias,” where the use of historical control groups fails to account for systemic changes over time.16 All these biases stem from the researcher’s inescapable “motivated reasoning”.13

2.2 Piercing the Veil of Information Concealment: Making the Unreadable Readable
Information concealment is another major obstacle to knowledge development. This concealment can be physical, such as the deterioration of documents, or linguistic, such as the barriers created by specialized jargon or ancient languages. AI technology, particularly the combination of computer vision and natural language processing, is penetrating these “veils of concealment” in unprecedented ways.
The Vesuvius Challenge is the most dramatic example of physical information concealment being overcome. In 79 AD, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried a library in a villa in the ancient city of Herculaneum. The thousands of papyrus scrolls in the collection were carbonized by the intense heat, becoming as fragile as charcoal; any attempt to physically unroll them would cause them to crumble into dust.8 For nearly two millennia, the contents of these scrolls remained a mystery. However, by combining high-resolution X-ray tomography (CT) and advanced AI models, researchers are now “virtually unrolling” them. The CT scans generate 3D data of the scrolls’ internal structure, but because both the ink and the papyrus are carbon-based, they have almost no contrast in X-ray images.8 The breakthrough here is AI. The research team used computer vision models, including
TimeSformer, to train an AI to recognize the extremely faint surface texture changes in the 3D data caused by the ink.24 Ultimately, the AI successfully identified ancient Greek letters within these carbonized “data blocks,” revealing one of the scrolls to be a treatise by the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus on pleasure and virtue.23 The significance of this achievement is profound: it proves that AI can bring information that was completely lost to human senses back into the realm of knowledge.
The applications of this capability extend far beyond this single case:
- Digitization of Historical Archives: Archives around the world hold hundreds of millions of handwritten documents that are largely unusable due to illegible handwriting, archaic languages, and sheer volume. AI platforms like Transkribus are changing this reality. Users can upload images of manuscripts, and AI models can automatically recognize and transcribe the handwritten text. It’s even possible to train custom models to adapt to specific handwriting and languages.22 This enables large-scale, full-text searching of these once-silent archives, fundamentally transforming the work of historians by freeing them from tedious transcription to focus on higher-level analysis.22
- Dissolving Linguistic and Cultural Barriers: Specialized knowledge and cultural heritage are often locked away in specific languages, creating an insurmountable “veil of concealment” for outsiders. AI translation is breaking down this barrier, especially in handling highly specialized and conceptually complex domains. In Buddhist studies, for example, a vast number of scriptures and treatises are written in Sanskrit, Pali, ancient Tibetan, and classical Chinese. Traditional translation is immensely time-consuming and requires profound expertise. Emerging AI translation systems, such as Vurbo.ai Buddhist 4.0, are built on databases containing tens of thousands of specialized terms and use an intermediate strategy of “translating to English first” to ensure the accurate translation of complex philosophical concepts.26 These systems not only perform text translation but also provide real-time simultaneous interpretation, allowing scholars and followers worldwide to participate in international academic conferences and religious events without language barriers.26 This overcomes the knowledge “concealment” caused by linguistic divides.
2.3 Dismantling Rhetoric and Reality: The Deconstruction of Persuasion
In political, legal, and public discourse, language is not just a tool for communication but a weapon of persuasion and influence. In his classic work Rhetoric, Aristotle categorized the means of persuasion into three types: ethos (appeal based on the speaker’s character and credibility), pathos (the emotional impact on the audience), and logos (persuasion based on logic and evidence).28 In real-world political discourse, however, speakers often abuse ethos and pathos to mask a lack of logos, achieving their political goals by establishing an authoritative image and inciting public emotion—a practice sometimes criticized by scholars as unscrupulous manipulation.9
This “fog of rhetoric” has long plagued citizens and analysts, making it extremely difficult to discern the truth and substance of political speech. The emergence of AI tools now offers the possibility of dispelling this fog, dissecting the rhetorical structure of language with surgical precision.
- General Rhetorical Analysis Tools: Emerging AI platforms like Discourse Analyzer can perform in-depth rhetorical analysis on any text. They can automatically identify rhetorical devices such as metaphors, allusions, and repetition, analyze how the author uses ethos, pathos, and logos to construct their argument, and detect common logical fallacies.29 This provides ordinary users with a powerful tool to understand how a text is attempting to persuade or influence them.
- Specialized Political Speech Analyzers: Taking it a step further, researchers are developing AI systems specifically for analyzing political discourse. DISPUTool, developed by the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (Inria), aims to automatically extract and analyze the argumentative structure of political debates, identifying affirmations and postulates, and even tracking the evolution of a candidate’s arguments.30 A Swedish project called
Klartext (meaning “plain text”) attempts real-time analysis during live political speeches. The system can transcribe the speech and use AI models to instantly assess a “rational/emotional score,” track “promises” made by the candidate, and identify their core themes.31 - Automated Detection of Propaganda Techniques: AI is also showing great potential in identifying more specific propaganda techniques. Research shows that AI models (such as those based on RoBERTa-CRF or ensemble methods of BiLSTM and GRU) can effectively identify “name-calling,” “loaded language,” “appeal to fear,” and “flag-waving” in text.32 Although AI’s performance on more complex propaganda techniques still needs improvement, these tools can already help users identify the most common and direct attempts at manipulation.32
The collective effect of these AI tools is a form of “disenchantment”—they reduce political speech from an art form full of emotional color and authoritative aura to its basic components: arguments, evidence, emotional appeals, and logical structure. By quantifying and visualizing these elements, AI enables citizens and analysts to look beyond the surface of rhetoric and directly examine its substantive content (logos). This fundamentally changes the way the public interacts with political discourse, potentially steering public debate back to a more fact-based and rational foundation.34
Part III: The New Synthesis: Case Studies in AI-Driven Humanities
The impact of artificial intelligence on the humanities and social sciences is not merely about overcoming old obstacles; it is about catalyzing a completely new paradigm of knowledge synthesis. Traditional humanities research was constrained by a “scarcity of interpretation”—historians could only read a limited number of archives, and political analysts could only watch a finite number of speeches, which meant that theoretical frameworks and subjective interpretations played a major role in filling evidentiary gaps. AI, however, creates an “abundance of experience”—it can analyze millions of documents and process every public statement a politician has ever made. This shift from scarcity to abundance means the humanities are evolving from purely interpretive disciplines to more empirical and evidence-based ones. This “new synthesis” is not just a new interpretation but a new form of knowledge based on an unprecedented scale of evidence.
3.1 Rewriting History from the Bits Up: From Eurocentrism to a Polyphonic Narrative
By integrating the capabilities discussed in Part II, AI is fostering a new kind of historiography. By overcoming selection bias and information concealment, it makes it possible to reconstruct history “from the bottom up.”
For a long time, historical narratives have been dominated by various biases. Eurocentrism reduced world history to the story of European civilization’s expansion, while elitist political history equated the activities of a few rulers with the changes in society as a whole.3 This narrative was largely shaped by the fact that the documents historians could rely on were primarily official archives and the writings of the elite, while the voices of the vast majority of common people, women, and ethnic minorities were systematically “muted” in the historical record.6
AI is breaking this silence. Through large-scale digitization and intelligent analysis, AI can process massive, non-traditional historical data sources, such as perfectly preserved parish records, personal letters, business ledgers, and court documents. These data contain rich information about the daily lives of ordinary people. AI can extract patterns from them, reconstructing the life trajectories, social networks, and economic conditions of previously overlooked groups. For example, by analyzing millions of digitized 19th-century newspapers and census data, researchers can trace the migration patterns, occupational changes, and social integration processes of immigrant groups with a precision and breadth that traditional methods could never achieve.
The ultimate outcome of this method is a “polyphonic” history. In this history, grand political narratives are interwoven with the micro-histories of countless individuals, and the decisions of the elite are reflected in the daily lives of the common people. This allows historians to empirically test long-standing theoretical assumptions. For instance, assertions about the impact of the Industrial Revolution on different social classes can now be quantitatively verified by analyzing millions of wage records and consumption data. This not only makes history richer and more complex but also brings it closer to an objective description of “what actually happened.”
3.2 The Political Sphere Through an Algorithmic Lens: Radical Transparency and Accountability
When the rhetorical deconstruction tools discussed in Part II are widely applied to the political sphere, the societal impact will be profound. It could usher in an era of “radical transparency,” fundamentally altering the relationship between politicians, the media, and the public.
Traditional mechanisms of political accountability suffer from significant lag and ambiguity. Voters can often only hold politicians accountable years later through elections, during which time politicians can use new rhetoric and promises to obscure their past actions and statements. AI-driven real-time analysis completely changes this dynamic. Imagine a scenario where, during a presidential debate, one side of the screen displays real-time analytical data generated by AI—the frequency of logical fallacies used, the ratio of emotional appeals to rational arguments, adherence to previous promises, and a consistency score with verifiable facts.31
In such an environment, traditional rhetorical manipulation would become nearly impossible. When a politician attempts to evade a substantive question by appealing to fear (pathos), the AI would immediately flag it. When their statements contradict public data, the system would instantly issue an alert. This immediate, data-driven feedback would compel politicians to focus more on the substance of their arguments (logos), as any attempt to deviate from facts or logic would be instantly exposed.36
This not only places higher demands on politicians but also empowers citizens and journalists. The public is no longer a passive audience to be persuaded but a critical reviewer armed with powerful analytical tools. Journalists can use these tools to ask sharper, more data-supported questions. In the long run, this could drive the entire political ecosystem toward a greater emphasis on substance, evidence, and integrity. The “rules of the game” in politics would shift from “who can speak better” to “whose arguments are more sound,” thereby establishing a more direct and effective mechanism of accountability.
Part IV: Inevitability or Ideology? A Critical Examination
While artificial intelligence demonstrates immense epistemological potential, viewing it as a straightforward path to objective truth is a form of naive technological determinism. The road to truth is littered with new traps and paradoxes. A critical examination of this report’s central thesis reveals that while AI can be a tool for truth, it can also become an amplifier of bias, a new battleground for political struggle, and a “black box” that erodes human cognitive abilities.
A profound contradiction can be termed the “Buffett-Vance Paradox.” On one hand, Warren Buffett’s investment philosophy offers a metaphor for understanding AI’s role: is AI providing genuine “knowledge” like an expert, or is it the ultimate “diversification” tool, protecting us from our own “ignorance” in understanding the world? This raises the risk of “deresponsibilisation.” On the other hand, the remarks of U.S. Senator J.D. Vance reveal another stark reality: this supposed “truth machine” is not a neutral oracle but is rapidly politicized from its inception, labeled as a “left-wing innovation” or even “communist”.38 The core of this paradox is that the very tool promising objective truth is simultaneously treated as an ideological weapon, and its mode of operation may lead us to trust it out of ignorance. This political co-optation and epistemological demotion pose a central challenge to the optimistic thesis of this report.
4.1 The Ghost in the Machine: Algorithmic Bias and the Reproduction of Error
The primary rebuttal to AI’s objectivity is that it is itself a product of human bias. The principle of “garbage in, garbage out” is vividly illustrated here. Large Language Models (LLMs) are trained on existing human text data, which is inherently filled with historical biases.6 If the historical documents used to train an AI are rife with Eurocentrism, the historical summaries it generates will inevitably reflect that bias. If the data used to train a hiring AI shows a historical preponderance of male engineers, the AI may discriminate against female candidates when screening resumes.
The insidious danger of this risk is that it can lead to the “naturalising of our biases”.21 When bias is encoded into a seemingly objective and neutral AI system, it takes on a veneer of scientific authority. People may mistake the AI’s output for objective truth, making these underlying biases harder to detect and challenge than ever before. A biased argument from a human historian can be debated and critiqued in academia; a similarly biased conclusion from a “truth machine” might be accepted without question.
Therefore, achieving objectivity with AI is not an automatic process but a daunting engineering and ethical challenge that requires continuous effort. This demands that researchers and developers take a series of proactive measures, including building transparent and explainable AI (XAI) models to allow external scrutiny of their decision-making logic; striving to create more diverse and representative training datasets by actively seeking out and including historically marginalized voices; and establishing independent third-party auditing mechanisms to continuously detect and correct bias in AI systems.
4.2 The Politics of the Truth Machine: A J.D. Vance Case Study
The remarks made by U.S. Senator J.D. Vance at a conference provide a perfect case study of how a powerful technology can be swiftly drawn into the vortex of political struggle. He claimed that in the tech world, “very smart Right-wing people tend to be attracted to Bitcoin and crypto,” while “very smart Left-wing people in tech tend to be attracted to AI,” and half-jokingly referred to AI as “communist”.38 The core logic of this assertion is that cryptocurrency is decentralized and aims to subvert centralized institutions like central banks, making it “Right-wing,” whereas AI relies on massive, centralized databases, making it fundamentally centralizing and thus “Left-wing”.38
The significance of this statement lies not in the rigor of its argument but in the harsh reality it reveals: a tool designed to transcend ideology and seek objective truth has itself become a label and a weapon in ideological battles from its very inception. In a polarized political environment, the claim of objectivity by a “truth machine” is itself a political act, immediately subject to scrutiny, questioning, and redefinition from different camps.
This raises a fundamental question: in a divided world, can a universally accepted, objective AI even exist? A more likely scenario is that different ideological factions will develop or embrace their own “truth machines.” We might then not have a single source of objective truth, but rather see a “Republican AI” and a “Democrat AI” attacking each other, each using vast data and complex algorithms to argue for the correctness of its worldview. In this case, AI, far from being a bridge to heal divides, could become a tool that exacerbates social rifts and solidifies ideological barriers.
4.3 The Expert and the Oracle: Knowledge, Information, and the Buffett Test
Warren Buffett’s investment philosophy provides a subtle analogy for assessing AI’s role in the humanities and social sciences. For the average investor, Buffett recommends broad diversification, such as his famous “90/10” asset allocation rule (90% in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund, 10% in short-term government bonds), a strategy he calls “protection against ignorance”.41 Because the average investor lacks the time, energy, and expertise to deeply research individual companies, investing in the entire market is the safest option. However, for expert investors who “know what they are doing,” Buffett advocates the opposite strategy: concentrated investment, putting most of their capital into a few companies they understand deeply and have high confidence in.42
This distinction raises a key question about AI: in the humanities, does AI function more like a “diversified index fund” or a “professional stock picker”?
- As an Oracle (Index Fund): When AI provides a highly accurate prediction or conclusion about a social phenomenon by analyzing massive datasets, it may be offering probabilistic information. We trust this information not because we understand the underlying causal mechanisms, but because it integrates all available data, offering protection for our “ignorance.” This carries the risk of “deresponsibilisation”.21 Researchers and the public might become epistemologically lazy, content to accept AI’s answers while abandoning deep, critical thinking about complex social issues.
- As an Expert (Stock Picker): For AI to generate profound, causal knowledge, it must be combined with the deep domain expertise of human specialists. However, current academic structures and data-sharing models pose obstacles. As research indicates, disciplinary silos within universities are rigid, and collaboration between computational scientists and social scientists is often discouraged rather than encouraged by institutional structures.7 Furthermore, the large-scale, high-value social data held by corporations and governments are often inaccessible to academia due to privacy, commercial secrecy, and regulatory concerns, making genuine, expert-led computational social science research difficult to conduct.7
Thus, the “Buffett Test” reveals a core tension on AI’s path to truth: are we content with a “black box oracle” that provides accurate answers, or are we committed to building a transparent tool that can collaborate with human experts to create profound knowledge? This is not just a technical choice, but a value judgment about the kind of future we wish to have.
Conclusion: Towards a Critically Optimistic Epistemology
The analysis in this report suggests that viewing artificial intelligence as a perfect truth-teller is a naive utopian fantasy, while seeing it merely as an amplifier of human bias is a pessimistic form of fatalism. Both extremes fail to capture the essence of the profound transformation AI is bringing to the humanities and social sciences.
The true significance of AI lies in its fundamental restructuring of the conditions of possibility for achieving objectivity in these fields. For centuries, human scholars, constrained by cognitive biases, information barriers, and the fog of rhetoric, have pursued objective truth more as an eternal approximation than an attainable goal. The advent of AI provides, for the first time, a set of tools powerful enough to systematically overcome these three major obstacles. In this sense, the “inevitable attainability” of truth is not a passively awaited endpoint, but a new possibility that must be realized through an active, and at times confrontational, process.
This path is not without its perils. The specter of algorithmic bias, the risk of the truth machine being politicized, and the danger of human cognitive abilities being “outsourced” to a black box are all real and pressing challenges. These challenges mean that AI’s epistemological promise cannot be automatically fulfilled.
Its realization ultimately depends on a new “dialectical relationship” between humans and machines. In this relationship, AI is tasked with what it does best: performing exhaustive, unbiased synthesis of massive datasets to reveal macro-level patterns and micro-level connections that transcend human perception. Human scholars, in turn, play an indispensable critical role: designing and guiding AI’s analytical processes, using their deep domain knowledge to scrutinize its training data and model assumptions, auditing its outputs for potential biases, interpreting the profound implications of its findings, and guarding against its use for irrational or manipulative ends.
The ultimate goal is not to replace human scholars with an algorithmic oracle, but to augment their capabilities with an unprecedentedly powerful tool. This future of human-machine collaboration holds the promise of finally achieving the epistemological ideals that philosophers have envisioned since the Enlightenment but have never fully been able to realize. It is a future full of hope, but one that also demands our utmost vigilance and wisdom.
