Feels like 1983…
Hey everyone!

The final quarters of the year typically contain fireworks for the financial markets, and this year is shaping up to be no different. In fact, with some of the geopolitical uncertainty, it may prove to be even more eventful.
Case in point, some of the largest single day market corrections, have all occurred during October.
- 1929 stock market crash
- 1987 Black Monday crash
- 2008 Global Stock Market Crash
This doesn’t mean that large financial events only happen in October, nor that there is anything else going on here, but history is something we can learn from and pattens, while they may not repeat, can at times rhyme..
Timeless Bitcoin Lesson
Western Society feels has been slowly drifting toward a scary place, and much of the actions taken by “leaders” of modern ‘‘democracies’’ would have shocked Orwell and Huxley!
Both of these men imagined and in fact, wrote about, how dark things could become in a technologically advanced society. If the past few years showed us anything, it’s that too few read their books or heeded their warnings.
In December of 2020, Aleksandar Svetski wrote an essay titled, ‘‘Utopian Dystopias,’’ in which he argued that neither Huxley or Orwell were entirely right, but that we somehow got a blend of the worst both worlds…lucky us..
Much of what was written in the 2020 essay, is coming true in 2023, so we felt that it would be appropriate to glean a couple lessons from it three years later.:
- You must choose Safety or Freedom.
One leads to easy, comfortable, safe ‘slavery’, the other to messy, uncomfortable, growth and freedom. - Speech matters
Orwell warned us that ‘‘those who speak the truth would be hated.’’ He was right. Speaking the truth in Brazil, Canada and Germany in 2023, will make you public enemy number one. (see below)
Rapid Fire Updates From Clown World
In light of the above, we have a few interesting recent developments:
-
Canada is now attempting to ban podcasts, or in their words, ‘‘force independent media outlets to gain licenses from the government.’’
-
Brazil’s most influential public figure was fined (75,000 & de-platformed for ‘‘online speech.’’ He had over 5 million followers online.
-
Germany has essentially put an end to independent blogging after a writer had his bank account frozen for calling a [fat] German politician ‘‘fat.’’
-
The UK is also busy banning free speech online, all in an effort to become the ‘‘safest country online in the world.’’ The UK’s newest law called ‘’The Online Safety Bill,’’ effectively ends end-to-end encryption in the country.
Social Signal
Cutting through the noise on Twitter.
- Would you rather be free but hungry, or well-fed, but caged?
-
Are we seeing signs that hyperinflation is closer than we imagined?
To answer that, we explored Saifedean’s essay in Edition 3 of The Times: Making Time Preference Low Again.
