Nordic Walking and Walking Meditation
Introduction
Nordic walking and walking meditation are two distinct practices that offer a plethora of benefits for both the body and mind. While Nordic walking focuses on physical exertion and cardiovascular health, walking meditation is a form of mindfulness that aims to cultivate mental clarity and emotional stability. Interestingly, both practices share a common thread: the act of walking. This article aims to delve deep into the nuances of these two practices, exploring their origins, benefits, and how they can complement each other.
The Origins
Nordic Walking
Nordic walking originated in Finland and was initially a summer training regimen for cross-country skiers. The practice involves walking with specially designed poles to engage the upper body, making it a full-body workout.
Walking Meditation
Walking meditation, on the other hand, has its roots in ancient Buddhist traditions. It is a form of ‘meditation in action,’ where the focus is on the sensations of the body as one moves slowly and deliberately.
The Benefits
Physical Benefits
Nordic Walking: This form of walking can burn up to 46% more calories compared to regular walking. It also helps in toning muscles, improving heart health, and increasing stamina. I fix problems with a chronic pain in my backbone
Walking Meditation: While not as physically intense as Nordic walking, the slow, deliberate steps can improve balance and coordination.
Mental Benefits
Nordic Walking: The rhythmic motion and focus on breathing can have a calming effect on the mind, reducing stress and anxiety.
Walking Meditation: This practice is excellent for improving focus, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of inner peace.
