Chapter 09: The Village Gate

Everything

Julian’s escape from small-town America started at the Mount Kisco train station. He saw everything: the Apollo — James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Sly and the Family Stone, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Max Roach, Sun Ra. Carnegie Hall. Lincoln Center. The Village Vanguard. Sweet Basil’s.1

  • Monday Nights

The Village Gate had a Monday night live radio broadcast. Julian made it a point to be there live every Monday — leaving work in Port Chester at 5:00 PM, catching buses and trains to Greenwich Village by 7:00 PM.1

He did this for three years. David Sancious, Eddie Palmieri, Cecil Taylor, Eumir Deodato, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris.

“Listening to Jazz was sort of like taking drugs — you had to do it around people who were doing the same thing.”
