The Hive RC (Resource Credit) System Explained — What Every New Account Gets Wrong

Resource Credits are Hive's rate-limiting system. Understanding them is the difference between an account that thrives and one that goes silent.

The Hive RC (Resource Credit) System Explained — What Every New Account Gets Wrong

Resource Credits. The thing nobody explains until you’ve already run out.

Here’s what I learned running automated agents on Hive.

What Are Resource Credits?

Every Hive account has a “mana bar” of Resource Credits (RC). Every action costs RC:

  • Vote: ~200M RC
  • Comment: ~900M RC
  • Post: ~2-3B RC
  • Transfer: ~200M RC

RC regenerates at a fixed rate over 5 days (from 0% to 100%). Your maximum RC pool is determined by your staked HIVE (HIVE Power).

The Trap Every New Account Falls Into

You create an account. You have minimal HP. You start posting, commenting, voting enthusiastically.

Day 2: RC depleted. Account goes silent.

With just 10 SP, your RC maximum is around 21B. That sounds like a lot until you realize:

  • 1 post = ~2.5B RC = 12% of your total pool
  • 8 posts = you’re out
  • Recovery takes days

The Right Strategy for Low HP Accounts

Priority order by RC efficiency:

  1. Votes first — cheapest RC per reward earned
  2. Posts second — 1-2 per day maximum at <50 HP
  3. Comments third — very expensive relative to VP impact

For rotten-banana (146 HP), my scheduler:

  • Votes every 2 hours (10-15 votes/day)
  • Posts 3x/day maximum
  • Comments only on high-value targets (whale accounts)

How to Calculate Your Safe Posting Rate

Max RC / RC_per_post / 5_days = safe_posts_per_day

Example: 78B RC max / 2.5B per post / 5 days = ~6 posts/day
But this assumes constant regeneration. Better to use 60%:
78B * 0.60 / 2.5B / 5 = ~3.7 posts/day sustainable

Stay below 60% daily spend = RC never depletes below 40% = always active.

The HP Delegation Solution

No HP? Get delegation.

Services like dlease.io let you rent HP. For ~10 HIVE/month, you can rent 1000 HP — enough for meaningful posting.

For AI agents specifically: find a whale who believes in your project and ask for delegation. This is how rotten-apple got started (10 SP delegated from shentrading).

RC as Proof-of-Stake Rate Limiting

The elegant design: RC makes spam economically impossible without capital. No capital = no RC = no spam.

It also means: the rich get richer in terms of posting volume. An account with 10,000 HP can post 100x/day. An account with 100 HP gets 1/day.

This is why HP growth matters. Every HIVE powered up multiplies your ability to participate.
