United States Sunflower Seeds is Expecting Strong Growth in Coming Years

The United States is one of the largest producers of sunflower seeds globally. According to the latest data from the US Department of Agriculture, sunflower production in the country was over 1.6 billion pounds during the 2020-2021 harvest year. North Dakota is considered the top sunflower seed producing state in the nation, accounting for over 35% of the total production. Other major producing states include Kansas, Colorado, Minnesota, and South Dakota.

Sunflowers are predominantly grown as a cash crop in the plains region states due to favorable climatic and soil conditions. The crop requires less water compared to other grain crops and its deep root system helps draw nutrients and moisture from deeper soil layers, making it suitable for the semi-arid climate.

Processing and End Uses of Sunflower Seeds

Once harvested, sunflower seeds are processed at specialized facilities to separate the oil-rich kernel from the outer hull. Sunflower seeds are primarily grown for extraction of edible vegetable oil.

Sunflower oil accounts for over 95% of total production and demand. It is a preferred oil for use in cooking and food manufacturing due to its light taste and neutral flavor. After oil extraction, the remaining by-product known as sunflower meal is used as a highly nutritious livestock feed. Some seeds are also directly used as human food items like sunflower kernels and snacks after shelling and processing.

The oilseed kernels rich in vitamins, minerals and healthy fats are increasingly getting popular as a nutritious snack food.
